The Arts & Business Council of Chicago invites you and other members of the arts and business communities to our Holiday Wonder party, Thursday, Dec. 14, 6:30-8:30pm, at Elastic Arts in Logan Square. Feel the warm, sparkly, cinnamon-infused joy of gathering with colleagues to celebrate the successes of 2017 and to anticipate the triumphs of 2018. Bring your team and make merry!
Read on to find out what you can expect at this extra-festive gathering.
A $25 ticket to this fun and casual event—in partnership with Audience Architects, an ArtCore member—includes:
- A 2-drink ticket and small bites
- Short performances throughout the night
- Open mic shout-outs to our peers and arts organizations, recognizing the year’s high points
- Viewing of the current Elastic exhibition – PAZ: Piñatas & Zines, by Oscar Arriola
- A performance from dance artist and educator Adriana Durant
- The sparkly sounds of Paul Giallorenzo, Co-Founder of Elastic Arts, on the piano
- Admission to the 9pm Elastic Arts show following the party: the jazz quartet of Dave Rempis, Jim Baker, Kent Kessler, and Avreeayl Ra (do not miss this!)
Paul Giallorenzo is a Chicago-based improviser, composer, producer, and sound designer using piano, synthesizer, keyboards, and electronics in a diverse range of contexts with a wide array of Chicago and international musicians in improvised, avant-jazz, experimental, and electro/acoustic music, performing regularly locally and throughout North America and Europe. Paul is also a presenter, organizer, and co-founder of the music venue/art gallery Elastic Arts, producing hundreds of creative music concerts and art events in Chicago since 2001.
On top of that, PAZ: Piñatas & Zines, an exhibition by Chicago artist Oscar Arriola, will be on display through the evening. PAZ explores parallels between piñatas and zines – two seemingly unrelated uses of paper. Between these two traditions, paper is used as a surface to display information, and as a material to dye and later to generate expressive forms – but Arriola explores the idea that there are more connections here than readily apparent.
Dance artist and educator Adriana Durant will bring her masterful improvisational dance style to Holiday Wonder. Durant teaches master classes and workshops nationally as a member of Like You Mean It, an improvisation trio focusing on group composition in performance and has worked as a teaching artist with A&BC arts clients Chicago Dance Institute, Striding Lion Performance Group, and Old Town School of Folk Music.
Following Holiday Wonder at 9:00pm you’re invited to stick around for an evening of jazz. Rempis/Kessler/Ra + Baker will join to perform at Elastic Arts’ Improvised Music Series, a 15-year tradition that allows artists working outside of the mainstream to present their work. The group, which is led by 2018 Ragdale in Schools Fellow Dave Rempis and known for their slow, patient approach to improvisation, is sure to end your night on a high note at Elastic Arts, which is uniquely suited to the special needs of improvisational jazz. Elastic Arts has been a client of the Arts & Business Council since 2009.
